April 26 1988 : The amazing Pixies at Burberries in Birmingham on their first tour of The UK - Black Francis and Kim Deal perform...Kim stares straight into camera while one of the crew tries to hold up the stack sidestage....

Burberries, with a capacity of around 200, was a venue I’d not been too before. It was some fancy kind of night club, mirrored walls, mirrors everywhere in fact. Were there really plastic palm trees or is my memory playing tricks? I shot the band backstage before the Melody Maker interview which took place in a van outside in the car park. I’ve got vague memories of drinking warm canned lager in the van whilst the grilling took place. I had to depart to shoot a Throwing Muses portrait so didn’t witness it all. The expectant audience began arriving as the interview wound up...leaving no time for the soundcheck.

The small and low stage was also surrounded by mirrors with gaps where the fans peered through. It was bizarre, the band being watched from all sides. I was stuck in one position which I’d chosen to shoot the gig from. Joey played in the confined space, literally standing next to me. The place was rammed and the crowd went mental, the sound amazing. I think that was one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to. Apparently the site of this amazing event is now a car park...

I was amazed how many of us who were actually there on the night left comments when Pixies shared this on their facebook page.
